Ok, so if I didn't learn my lesson last year, I am trying it again. For Lent I have given up drinking (YIKES!) for those of you who don't remember, last year it took about 3 weeks for me to fall off the wagon. This year I have set up a support system. One of my dear friends here in Milwaukee has also decided to "just say no" to alcohol for the next month and a half. If either of us feels weak we will call the other up, if, and only if, the other party vouches that the temptation is valid are we allow to have ONE drink (I know its kinda a cop out, but this is damn hard) oh yeah, I gave up cursing too (oops!) So here are my foreseen challenges: Mom and Dad come in town this weekend, Mom already said that I should get a dispensation for the weekend (what a bad influence); St Patty's Day conveniently falls about a week short of Easter . . . I think the bishop normally grants dispensation for those that give up alcohol for Lent (especially if he's Irish); finally, I will be in NYC for the week preceding Easter, can I really take in all of NYC without experiencing the bar scene? I will keep you posted as to what happens. Peace.

Q: I will be in NYC for the week preceding Easter, can I really take in all of NYC without experiencing the bar scene?

A: No.

Bethany,

The answer to your last question is no, you cannot.

Have a nice evening.

B

Since Vatican II you have dispensation when ever traveling.

How about you try to give up something that you are actually able to give up for the 40 days.

I am not sure the point of giving something up to experience sacrifice and commitment if you aren't actually going to do it? I guess the real question when does alcohol become a problem..when can't live w/out it? The Bethany I knew was ruled by her conviction and was steadfast and determined to remain commited. I am sure you remember that girl?
